About

An engaging account of a Scotsman’s life in Russian service, military conflicts of the 17th century, and personal observations of a diplomat-officer. The series of lectures dedicated to the 390th anniversary of Patrick Leopold Gordon's birth continues with a meeting that will discuss the eventful period of this remarkable officer's biography. Gordon, a Scottish mercenary who joined the Russian service, became a participant and attentive witness to the historical processes occurring in Russia in the second half of the 17th century. The lecture is based on Gordon's personal memoirs. His diary, which he kept for over forty years, has become an invaluable source of information for historians about diplomatic missions, military conflicts, and daily life of that time. One such episode is his participation in quelling the rebellion in Novooskol in 1671. Five years later, Gordon took part in military actions against the Zaporozhian hetman Petro Doroshenko, and later in the heroic defense of Chigirin against the Ottoman army, where his merits were recognized with a promotion to major-general.
