The lecture will discuss an event that contemporaries referred to as the "third Russian revolution" - a closed session where Nikita Khrushchev delivered the report "On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences." The text was not intended for publication, but quickly escaped the confines of the hall, began to spread through party structures, and then around the world, launching consequences that turned out to be much larger than the original intent. The lecturer will talk not only about the content of the report but also about how it became possible at all. The audience will learn what underpinned it, how Khrushchev shocked the Soviet and global audience, how his speech was received in the USA, Poland, and Hungary, and what political processes it initiated.
