About

The meeting will discuss how the book transcends its usual role as a carrier of text and transforms into an independent object of art. A book can function as a cohesive artistic statement - with its own architecture, rhythm, and system of meanings. Everything matters here: the format and layout, the paper density, the repetition of motifs, the pauses between images, and even the way of turning pages. Multidisciplinary artist and designer Andrey Artyukhin will talk about the book as an object - a separate work of art. The conversation will cover books from the 20th and 21st centuries: avant-garde and constructivist publications, surrealist experiments, conceptual projects, photo books, graphic novels, visual and concrete poetry, artists' books, art zines, and independent publishing initiatives. The lecturer will pay special attention to how to interact with such publications in different spaces. A book in a library is read differently than in a museum or at an exhibition: sometimes it requires silence and time, sometimes a display case and distance, and sometimes a live contact with the reader. This meeting will be useful for designers, artists, illustrators, researchers of visual culture, as well as anyone interested in modern forms of the book. The meeting will take place as part of the exhibition "Black-White. White-Black." Ideas on where to go in Moscow are collected on our website.
