A lecture on how the inhabitants of Antiquity and the Middle Ages imagined the supernatural and who helped them deal with invisible threats. Today we are sure: there are no witches, and the supernatural remains in books and movies. But for people of ancient times, everything was different. The inhabitants of Antiquity and the early Middle Ages perceived strange phenomena as part of everyday reality and sought help from those who could "work" with the invisible world at the first signs of danger. Who played this role at different times? What diseases and fears did they turn to them with? Which rituals and beliefs have survived to this day, and what has turned into folklore? Participants will learn how ideas about protection from evil forces were formed and why some ancient traditions unexpectedly proved to be resilient even in modern society.
