About

The wayang shadow theater is capable of not only mesmerizing with its beauty but also shaping the political agenda. Politics and theater are a very ancient alliance. Stage art has served not only for entertainment since time immemorial but also as a means of expression, veiled protest, or approval of power. This is especially evident in the traditional Javanese theater of wayang. Listeners of the lecture will trace how puppet performances accompanied key milestones in the history of the republic, how they raised important topics, cloaked criticism in symbols and images, and sometimes even helped legitimize state power. Special attention will be paid to the New Order period in Indonesia - the era of Suharto, when wayang served as a propaganda machine. Today, shadow theater continues to amaze - it has now become a platform for public discussions, political satire, and cultural diplomacy. The lecture will be conducted by Ulyana Klimenko - theater researcher, political scientist, and author of the blog "Wayang-Mayank." If you don't know where to stroll in Moscow, visit KudaGo.
