The lecture will showcase Vasilievsky Island through old maps - from Peter I's vision to the creation of tram routes, the Strelka, and lines with unexpected stories. Some associate Vasilievsky Island with the Strelka and views of the Neva, while others connect it with universities, courtyards, lines, museums, or literary routes. The lecture will examine it through old maps. Listeners will learn how the space, envisioned by Peter I as the center of the capital, gradually transformed into a complex urban area with its own logic. The maps will help reveal processes that often go unnoticed during a regular walk: how the Free Island ceased to be free and became part of Vasilievsky, where sawmills were located on the Strelka and why they disappeared, and how the first tram left the island. The lecturer will discuss whether Nikita Kozhemyaka is related to the Leather Line and will show how traces of different eras are preserved in toponymy, plans, and construction details.
