Since antiquity, people have repeatedly tried to explain the world in a way that leaves room for mystery. Sociologist Max Weber referred to the process by which the magical view of things recedes before rationality and faith in the complete scientific explainability of the universe as "disenchantment." Along with this, the sense of the sacred disappears from everyday life - and it is here that the tension arises that gives birth to new forms of culture. The lecture at the Mayakovsky Library will trace how different traditions responded to "disenchantment." Romantics turned mystical experience into art, conservative thought sought support in religious awe, and 20th-century authors turned to the idea of original Tradition and lost order. In this context, fantasy emerges as a mass attempt to restore depth to the world, where wonder and meaning resonate seriously once again. A separate conversation will address who and how attempted to "re-enchant" reality. What is the vulnerability of secular society, why does it generate longing for the "unenchanted," and which themes - power, community, heritage, fate - are most vividly expressed in genre stories? It will be shown what techniques writers use to create a sense of the sacred and why in such texts the confrontation between order and chaos, law and exception, is so important.
