About

How to draw infinity, and why has this task fascinated artists and thinkers for centuries? The meeting will discuss how humanity has tried to make the immeasurable visible. The starting point will be the work of Albrecht Dürer. Through his visual language, one can see that in the Age of Enlightenment, infinity ceased to be a metaphor and became a subject of contemplation. Special attention will be given to the famous engraving "Melancholia - I," which depicts measuring instruments and geometric bodies symbolizing the conflict between reason and imagination. Then the lecturer will provide examples from different cultures where infinity is "assembled" from lines, circles, spirals, crosses, and other signs. Why do some forms seem calm and stable, while others appear anxious and open? How does meaning change, and why is it sometimes enough to have just one detail for a symbol to "sound" anew? If you enjoy finding hidden meanings in works of art and exploring the connections between science and the humanities, this lecture will provide plenty of food for thought.
