What does a city without traffic jams, garbage heaps, and boring neighborhoods look like? In a class about ancient Greek poleis, students will take on the role of urban planners: they will analyze the layout of an ancient city, decipher the purpose of the acropolis and agora, learn how the water supply and sewage systems worked, and why theaters were built on the slopes of hills. It is easy to imagine the ancient Greek polis from a history textbook, but it is much more interesting to view it as a living organism, where every square, street, and staircase follows a common logic. In the class, students are invited to look at the familiar city through the eyes of an architect from antiquity and notice that many of the solutions we are accustomed to today were invented thousands of years ago.
