About

Fashion is not just about things, but also about meanings. This lecture on stylists in the series "History of the Global Fashion Industry" will reveal the path of the profession - from court masters to heroes of fashion shoots. We will explore why a stylist is not just a trend expert, but an architect of visual culture. A stylist is not just someone who selects clothes for a figure or advises what is fashionable today. They are a visual architect, creating images that combine style, psychology, history, and culture. This lecture from the series "History of the Global Fashion Industry", conducted by the club "Optics of Vision", offers an immersion into the evolution of this profession: from the first court stylists to the authors of fashion revolutions on the covers of Vogue. Together with fashion stylist and educator Nikita Zelepukhin, participants will learn how from Marie-Jeanne "Rose" Bertin - the personal dressmaker of Marie Antoinette - stylists have come to the likes of Law Roach, who shapes the face of modern pop culture. We will examine how style has become a language of social identity, and how clothing is not just a cover, but a way to express oneself. The lecture will raise questions about visual culture: how the profession evolves, who dictates trends, how a stylist can influence perception, and what they have in common with an architect. After all, working with colors, shapes, and textures is not just aesthetics, but precise, calculated work that takes everything into account: from physiognomy to cultural context. We will also analyze modern realities: today a stylist is both a creator, a psychologist, and a marketer. They can read the desires of the client, transform ideas into visual solutions, and still remain in dialogue with the fashion industry. This is an art that requires sensitivity, visual literacy, and extensive knowledge. This lecture will be of interest to design students, aspiring and practicing stylists, as well as anyone fascinated by fashion as a cultural phenomenon. You can expect an exciting journey through eras and images - from cloaks to runway capsules.
