The focus of the discussion is on Old Believer churches, chapels, prayer houses, and cemeteries. The lecture is part of the series "Orthodox Moscow. History and Culture." The meeting is dedicated to how various Old Believer sects emerged and developed in the city: Popovtsy, Beglopopovtsy, and Besspopovtsy. A separate focus will be on the Rogozhskoye and Preobrazhenskoye cemeteries, which became the most important centers of Old Belief and points around which community life was formed. Listeners will learn why the early 20th century was particularly eventful for Old Believer Moscow. During this time, churches were built, and church-community associations and institutions were opened. The conversation will then shift to the 1920s and 1930s, when almost all Old Believer churches were closed, and communities faced pressure and loss of familiar spaces.
