Linguist Elizaveta Gromenko will explain why language changes faster than we can notice, and how new words penetrate our speech. You will see how yesterday's novelties like slang or jargon suddenly sound familiar, while old norms fade into the past. Elizaveta Gromenko, a candidate of philological sciences from HSE and the Russian Academy of Sciences, will show examples of where these words come from and why some take root while others disappear. At the lecture, you will be able to participate in a discussion: analyze how a word becomes "one of its own" for everyone. You will learn how language influences emotions and decisions - simply and visually, without theory.
