Slavic motifs provide the writer with ready-made rhythms, names, images of forests and cities, family rules, and a language of gestures. This lecture will discuss how the genre of ethno-fantasy developed in Russia and why it is making history personal again. Maria Semyonova and Anna Gurova will show how to seek support in sources, while ensuring that the text does not become a mere summary. You will explore where to find material: chronicles, ethnography, music, everyday objects, museum collections. The writers will explain how to separate fact from beautiful legend, how to build a system of beliefs and rules for characters, and how to work with speech so that it sounds alive and does not fall into stylization for the sake of stylization.
