About

"Tale of Kizhi" is a conversation about Kizhi Island and its main symbol, the Church of the Transfiguration, through history, military events, and poetic texts. At the center of the program is the Kizhi Pogost on Lake Onega, one of the most famous monuments of wooden architecture in the Russian North. Participants of the meeting will get acquainted with the history of the Church of the Transfiguration, its architectural features, and how this temple has been preserved over the centuries in challenging historical conditions. A separate part of the story is dedicated to the events of the Great Patriotic War and the period of Finnish occupation of the Kizhi Pogost. We will discuss the impact of the war on the island's history and how the church was preserved as an important monument of culture and history. The program is complemented by poetic works of Karelian authors who wrote about Kizhi Island, its nature, and spiritual atmosphere. Registration can be done here. Where to go in St. Petersburg in winter, KUDAGO will tell.
