About

The history of the architectural ensembles of Gatchina hides many surprising pages - one of which is dedicated to the Orphan Institute. The Orphan Institute is an important but little-known part of Gatchina's cultural and architectural heritage. The lecture by local historian Tamara Vitalyevna Turapina from the series "Architectural Ensembles of Gatchina" will allow you to look into the past and uncover one of the most touching pages of the city's history. Originally established as a rural educational home in 1803, the institute was located in a reconstructed cattle yard on the grounds of the Gatchina estate. However, by the end of the 19th century, this institution had transformed into an extensive complex of buildings occupying an entire block on the edge of the Palace Park. The facade of the main building faced Paul I Avenue, emphasizing the significance of the institution not only as an educational establishment but also as an element of the urban environment. Lecture attendees will learn how this architectural ensemble was arranged, how it developed over time, and what influence it had on the cultural and social life of the city. To participate in the lecture, do not forget to register. We share on our website where to go with children in St. Petersburg.
