About

In 1904, an exhibition titled "Scarlet Rose" took place in Saratov, where symbolist artists first made their mark. The lecture will discuss the features of this movement and its key representatives. Symbolism is an artistic movement that emerged in the last third of the 19th century and manifested itself in poetry, philosophical-aesthetic thought, and visual arts. Continuing and reinterpreting the legacy of Romanticism, Symbolism turns to the realm of the mystical and sacred, striving to reveal the hidden depths of the human soul, nature, and historical memory. Drawing on the traditions of ancient symbolic cultures, artists and poets develop a unique poetics and system of images that reflect the complex spiritual and religious quests at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. To embody these ideas, Symbolism often employs expressive and decorative forms of Art Nouveau. In Russian art, Symbolism developed in two stages - from the early 1890s to the late 1910s: from the bold innovative experiments of Mikhail Vrubel to the refined, sophisticated imagery of the masters of the "Blue Rose" association. The lecture will be conducted by art historian Irina Grigoryan. Where to go in Moscow, KUDAGO will suggest.
