About

Sound can be a material for sculpture, a part of space, or a document of everyday environment. Musician Zhenya Tatartseva will explain how sound art differs from conventional music, how artists create installations and soundscapes, and what role technology, space, and the listener's attention play in these works. Musician and music theory teacher Zhenya Tatartseva will discuss various ways of working with sound. A sound sculpture can emerge through movement, vibration, and the properties of an object, while an installation can combine recording, architecture, and the viewer's route. A soundscape draws attention to the sonic character of a place, allowing one to hear the city, nature, or a room as a complex composition. A separate conversation will be dedicated to field recordings. The artist captures voices, footsteps, wind, the workings of mechanisms, and other sounds of the environment, and then documents them or transforms them into new artistic material. This approach develops auditory observation: a familiar place begins to be perceived through details that are usually lost in the general background. We share ideas on where to go in Saint Petersburg this weekend.
