About

A lecture for those who want more than just to love music - they want to understand how the personal stories of composers turned into bold artistic decisions. An excursion into the history of academic music will begin with the romantic tradition. The lecturer will explain how large forms, orchestral colors, and attention to the inner world of the hero prepared the ground for future bold experiments. Examples will include works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. A separate block will be dedicated to Richard Wagner, his innovative orchestra, and grand operas that still provoke heated debates. Next, the discussion will turn to the music of the 20th century. Using Dmitri Shostakovich as an example, listeners will learn about the life of an artist in a world where art faced harsh censorship, about coded messages in symphonic scores, and how tragedy and irony can coexist in a single work. Listeners will become acquainted with the main directions of musical modernism: impressionism, expressionism, and serial technique. They will learn what dodecaphony is, how composers used mathematical ideas, and why strict formulas can give rise to living, emotional sound. In conclusion, the lecturer will talk about minimalism, the electronic scene, contemporary academic music, pop culture, and dance directions.
