About

Contemporary painting with its rough brushstrokes, deliberate carelessness, and childlike naivety often provokes irritation: "anyone can do that." In the lecture, listeners will be invited to view expressionism and bad painting as a unique artistic language. When we look at expressionist paintings or canvases in the spirit of bad painting, it often seems as if the artist was in a hurry, didn’t know how to paint, or completely disregarded academic rules. Blurred outlines, rough lines, and strange proportions challenge the conventional notion of a "beautiful" painting and raise the question - is there really an intention here, or is the viewer simply asked to come to terms with chaos? The lecture will thoroughly examine how expressionism rejected smoothness and neatness in favor of the power of experience, bold gesture, and emotional honesty. The emergence of the bad painting style became the next step in this process - artists began to consciously choose "roughness," making mistakes visible, and emphasizing the inappropriate and awkward. Thus, roughness transformed into an expressive language, and carelessness became a way to speak about anxiety, fragility, and tension. Listeners will learn how attitudes towards "bad painting" changed in the 20th and 21st centuries, which artists worked with this strategy, and why their canvases sometimes provoke mockery and irritation. The discussion will address how expectations, the habit of seeking technique, and the fear of admitting that you do not understand what exactly you are looking at affect viewer perception. The lecturer will explain how the expressionist gesture and the style of bad painting are connected to the history of art, social changes, and cultural anxieties of recent decades. KudaGo presents the current program in Moscow. * bad painting - "bad painting."
