About

The meeting is dedicated to Rainer Maria Rilke's book "The Florentine Diary" and the inner journey that the reader undergoes alongside its characters. The lecture will be conducted by literary scholar Natalia Zakharova. She will read excerpts from the book that help to feel how attentively Rilke observes the details - the color of the stone, the gesture of a passerby, the light in the studio window. These observations become an opportunity to discuss how the poet connects external impressions with internal experiences, why he needs notes about paintings and sculptures, and how reflections on art relate to his own life. Gradually, it becomes clear that "The Florentine Diary" is not only a route through the city but also a map of a spiritual journey. The lecturer will build a bridge between the text of the early 20th century and today's readers, explaining the historical context and Rilke's biography, and commenting on his philosophical motives. She will also discuss with the audience what it means to "prepare for a journey" through the text, how not to get lost in the flow of impressions, and to allow oneself a spontaneous encounter with a work of art. Where to go in Moscow today will be told by our website.
