About

How is a ladies' saddle constructed, why did female riders sit sideways, and what rules dictated their etiquette? In the lecture and curatorial tour, participants will examine antique saddles and costumes, compare historical and modern models, and learn how to choose equipment for horses today. Side-saddle riding has been considered the only acceptable position for women for centuries. In the lecture-presentation and curatorial tour, participants will explore how this tradition formed and why it continues to exist today. Elena Potapova will explain the structure of the ladies' saddle and show how it differs from the conventional model. The discussion will cover leg positioning, support, balance, and construction details that help the rider maintain stability. Participants will discuss norms that prohibited women from riding "like men" and changes in the rider's costume. Using examples of antique models, attendees will see how craftsmen addressed issues of safety and comfort. Among the exhibits will be antique saddles and several riding costumes. The lecture is related to the historical and artistic exhibition "The World of Women of the Silver Age. Ladies' Equestrianism." Find other events in Moscow on KudaGo.
