About

The lecture is dedicated to the theme of hunting in Dutch and Flemish painting of the 17th century - from grand scenes and whaling to tense encounters between man and predator. The discussion will touch on composition, color, movement, and different artists' perspectives on this subject, including those who saw hunting as cruelty and inner conflict. Hunting in 17th-century art is much more than a tale of game, dogs, trophies, and the countryside leisure of the nobility. Behind the external spectacle of such scenes lie ideas about power, courage, risk, violence, and the structure of a world in which man constantly tests his strength in confrontation with nature. This is why hunting scenes in Dutch and Flemish painting are so attractive to the attentive eye: they allow us to see the era through its passions, habits, and artistic techniques. The lecture will discuss the works of Thomas Wyck, Pieter van Laar, Adriaen van de Velde, Frans Snyders, and Peter Paul Rubens. Ideas on where to go in Yekaterinburg are collected on our website.
