About

The lecture will help to see modern sculpture as a living language of ideas, materials, and technologies. Svetlana Sokolova's lecture will help to understand how the art of sculpture has changed and why it today exists on the border of material, gesture, image, and technology. The conversation will begin with the avant-garde period in art when artists began to abandon stable monumental forms. An example will be the mobiles of Alexander Calder, in which movement becomes a full-fledged artistic material, and the object begins to live in a changing rhythm. Further, the discussion will focus on radical shifts: from three-dimensionality to the plane, screen, and image, from finished form to process, from a separate object to the experience of perception. Using Robert Morris as an example, listeners will see how minimalism included the viewer and space into the artwork itself. The works of Eva Hesse represent another line - a soft, vulnerable materiality that argues with the idea of control, durability, and eternal form. The lecture is suitable for those interested in modern art, exhibitions, and visual culture. On our website, we tell about free events in Moscow.
