About

The lecture will explore Moskovsky Avenue as a map of architectural ambitions and unfulfilled urban plans. Moskovsky Avenue is easily perceived as a familiar urban thoroughfare: transport, buildings, metro stations, squares, and the flow of everyday routes. However, behind this recognizable facade lies a vast history of urban planning ideas, political symbols, and plans that were partially realized and partially remained in the blueprints of urban myths. In the lecture, local historian Mikhail Krainov will suggest walking along this axis as the main avenue of another, unfulfilled Leningrad. Attendees will count the blocks, trace how Leningrad tried on the role of Moscow, and delve into the Circular Canals, squares, and monuments. Stories will be shared about skyscrapers, comrades with banners, and the second metro line, which turned 65 years old. It was laid under Moskovsky Avenue, although in another version of urban development, it could have been above it. Find other events in St. Petersburg on KUDAGO.
