Leningrad as a text, and photography as a way to read it. The meeting will examine series and exhibition projects by Russian authors from the late Soviet period to the 2010s, which grew out of the idea of "literary Petersburg." They will discuss walks through the places of Akhmatova, Blok, Dostoevsky, and how the city becomes the hero of the frame. The city is read in different ways: some by facades, some by courtyard wells, and some by books. This meeting is about how "literary Petersburg" turned into a theme for large photographic series and exhibition projects from the late 1970s, 1980s, and beyond, up to the 2010s. At the center of the conversation is the legacy of Nikolai Antsiferov and his book about the "soul" and "incomprehensibility" of the city, as well as about Dostoevsky's Petersburg. In those years, they were cherished and passed from hand to hand. Thus, routes emerged through literary addresses in Leningrad. People quickly got used to these walks, but the view of the city changed: familiar places began to sound like lines, and the streets formed a narrative. Photographers also followed this path. The camera became a notebook, and the series became a form of storytelling. One author captured the silence of courtyards and staircases, another sought a sign of the era in shop windows and posters, and a third worked with the city as a backdrop for memory. As a result, projects emerged where Petersburg acts as a hero and co-author, and literature sets the optics. The lecturer, the chief curator of museum items at ROSPHOTO and a photography historian, will unpack this story: what a series is, how it is constructed, how it differs from a random set of images, and how an exhibition changes the meaning of a frame. He will show how documentary, personal intonation, and cultural context converge on a single theme. Names such as Boris Smelov, Alexander Chezhin, Vladimir Egorovsky, Vladimir Degtyarev, Vladimir Yankilevsky, Alexander Polushkin, and others will be mentioned. A separate discussion will touch on group projects - "Poem Without a Hero" about Akhmatova and "My Block," where different exhibitions were gathered around one figure. Such projects help to see how the language of photography and interest in the city have changed.
