About

Where is the boundary between ritual and performance, and what is performance? This will be discussed by Irina Orlova, a master's student in cultural studies at HSE. Not everyone knows what the term "performance" means. The host, Irina Orlova, will explain where it came from in the humanities, how it has changed, and why today it is used by anthropologists, theater scholars, and sports researchers. Listeners will learn whether it is possible to draw a clear line between ritual and theatrical performance. They will get acquainted with Richard Schechner's ideas about "effectiveness" and "entertainment," Victor Turner's concept of liminality, and examine how these theories work in life: for example, in a play or in sports competitions. The host will explain why a performance is an event, not a "product." When the performer and the audience are present together, a unique situation of shared presence is born. The audience stops being a silent witness and becomes a co-author, somehow influencing what happens on stage. Listeners will be able to provide their own examples from theater, concerts, museum practices, and urban events. This lecture will be useful for those interested in contemporary culture and wanting to understand where the power of collective experience comes from. KudaGo features the current Moscow program.
