About

Why does one phrase from a movie instantly bring strangers closer together, while another person in the same company feels like an outsider? Philologist Anna Komishkova, PhD and research fellow at the School of Philological Sciences at HSE, will give a lecture on quotes, allusions, and references - about how foreign texts have become our second language. The talk will address how quotes and references form circles of "insiders", why some people find this language easy while others do not, and how this affects how we are perceived by those around us. Memes in the work chat, phrases from movies, literary references in conversation - all of this works as a recognition system of "us vs. them", and the lecture is precisely about the structure of this system. You can listen to the lecture for free, but registration on the website of the Nekrasov Library is required. Ideas on where to go in Moscow are collected on our website.
