The talk will focus on book illustration, journal satire, heroes of English literature, and the visual language of the era, whose techniques are still noticeable in art, media, and popular culture today. The Victorian era turned reading into a spectacular experience. Novels were published with illustrations, magazines debated with society in the language of caricature. The meeting will explore how literature became part of visual culture and why 19th-century printed graphics still influence our perception of classic plots. A separate topic will be the magazine Punch, one of the main satirical publications of the Victorian era. Lecturer Polina Eustafieva will discuss how Victorian artists influenced 20th-century art, illustration, design, and screen images. All entertainment in Peter is gathered on our website.
