This lecture helps to see Kaliningrad as a living archive of eras, where Gothic, Prussian austerity, Soviet ambitions, and traces of war coexist. The conversation will focus on iconic buildings, vanished symbols, and urban paradoxes through which the fate of an entire region is read - dramatic, complex, and truly captivating. Kaliningrad is rarely perceived as an ordinary Russian city, and this is its special strength. Almost every block here holds traces of another country, another historical logic, and another urban memory. On one map converge the Teutonic Order, Immanuel Kant, Prussian architecture, Soviet urban planning experiments, and a new modern identity. That is why the conversation about it becomes much broader than a simple sightseeing tour - it is an attempt to understand how history can change space and how space continues to speak about the past even when much has already disappeared. The focus will be not only on well-known symbols but also on the complex decisions that shaped the appearance of Kaliningrad after the war. Why was the House of Soviets built in place of the Royal Castle? Why were some German buildings preserved while others were irretrievably demolished? How did the city change after 1945, and what remains today of its former grandeur? Through these questions, one can see not a collection of facts but a tense history of a region that has undergone radical rethinking. Special attention will be given to the Cathedral, fortifications, pre-war villas of Amalienau, and city gates. These objects are important not in themselves but as parts of a larger urban biography. They allow us to trace how the image of Königsberg was formed, how it was traumatized by war, and how it gradually transformed into Kaliningrad. The lecture promises to show that architecture is always more than just walls and facades: it embodies ideology, memory, the ambitions of the time, and human destinies.
