About

Vision helps birds of prey spot their prey from great heights, while hearing helps them find chicks, recognize danger, and communicate. Ornithologist Yuri Mikhailov will explain how birds perceive space and will discuss the unusual adaptations of owls, albatrosses, swallows, and other species. Humans most often notice birds with their eyes - by silhouette, color, or flight pattern. For the birds themselves, vision serves as a working tool: it helps them assess distances, navigate, and find food. The ability of predators to spot prey from great heights is particularly impressive. In the lecture, Yuri Mikhailov will analyze what perceptual features allow birds to solve such tasks. The second important channel of communication with the surrounding world is hearing. By their voices, birds recognize their kin, find chicks, warn of danger, and mark occupied territory. Sounds also play a role in courtship behavior, so singing is connected to communication, partner selection, and territory defense. A separate part of the meeting will be dedicated to navigation. Birds have to memorize routes, find nests, move in complex environments, and respond to changes around them. The ornithologist will explain how the senses work together and why the same mode of perception is organized differently in species with different lifestyles.
