Photography has become the main chronicler of Petersburg: it captures the small details of streets, shop windows, and facades that slip from memory. In the lecture, we will analyze how the city has "educated" authors since the 1850s, why the genre of urban landscape has changed with technologies, and where in the frame the history of everyday life hides. The speaker is Igor Lebedev from ROSPHOTO. Petersburg has gotten used to speaking to us in images. Initially, these were drawings and engravings, and from the mid-19th century, the city acquired a new memory - photography. A snapshot can capture what changes imperceptibly: signs, shadows from lanterns, the layout of the pavement, the proportions of a courtyard-well. And it is precisely through these small details that history is later read. The lecture will discuss how Petersburg photographers have collected a visual biography of the city over the course of one and a half centuries. Petrograd, Leningrad, Saint Petersburg - these are different eras, but one stage. It is constantly being rebuilt, and each time the camera poses new questions: what to consider primary, where the boundary lies between document and artistic expression, and why the urban landscape has become a genre with its own ethics. We will analyze how everyday life, politics, fashion for new districts, and the language of advertising are reflected in the frame. A separate layer of conversation is technique. Lenses, development, printing, digital media change, and along with this, the perspective changes. Sometimes new equipment provides sharpness and speed, sometimes it changes the very distance to the hero of the frame. The opportunity arises to capture the movement of the crowd, wet snow on the tram window, a moment before closing the shutters. Thus, the city dictates the rules, and the author seeks their own way to hear them.
