The image of a Muslim woman in cinema is a reflection of the era, politics, and cultural transformations. How does cinema influence perceptions of culture, religion, and gender? The lecture explores how the perception of women in the Caucasus and Central Asia has changed over the decades. Soviet cinema, which became a tool of propaganda, actively shaped the new image of women, especially in peripheral regions. Films from the 1920s and 1930s participated in the ideological campaign to dismantle the traditional order, including through images of Muslim women. Women became symbols of modernization - from liberation from religious restrictions to entering public and working life. Our website features the current program of Saint Petersburg.
