About

Participants will analyze the techniques of screenwriters and directors, learn about the visual and sound tools for creating sympathy for heroes, and discuss controversial images in domestic and world cinema that change along with culture. Cinema often compels viewers to empathize with characters, but behind this effect are well-thought-out artistic decisions. In the meeting, participants will explore how the image of a character perceived as positive is created, and what details help the viewer take their side. The conversation will focus on why some actions evoke trust and sympathy, while others change the audience's attitude towards the hero. Attention will be given to screenwriting techniques, working with imagery, light, and sound, as well as the ways filmmakers guide audience perception. The influence of time, historical period, and political context on notions of right and wrong will also be examined. The meeting will be led by Dmitry Dubrovsky - screenwriter and film scholar.
