About

Andrei Drozdov's lecture will reveal the image of Catherine II through the lens of satirical caricatures. The lecture "The Image of Catherine the Great in World Caricature" is a unique journey into an era where drawing could be more dangerous than a pamphlet, and satire more influential than an official manifesto. The author and host of the lecture is Andrei Drozdov, head of the Comics Center, producer, and creative inspirer of a series of graphic novels about the poets of the Silver Age. His view of Catherine II is informal, lively, rich in details and parallels that make the distant past truly close. Visitors will learn how world caricature reflected the time of Catherine II - the empress who embodied reformist power and at the same time despotism. Why did artists of that time mock her so often? What images, symbols, and exaggerations were used? What role did caricatures play in shaping public opinion - and can they be trusted as historical sources? Special attention will be paid to political scandals, reforms, and international politics. The lecture will show how the artistic language illustrated complex historical processes and will help to view Catherine II through the eyes of her contemporaries - both European and Russian, favorable and critical.
