The lecture helps to see beyond the tourist images into a living, contradictory world where nature and architecture engage in a long conversation. The conversation begins in ancient times when glaciers and a harsh climate set the rules for survival, and future cities were only beginning to take shape along the shores. Participants will learn how regions were formed, what coastal settlements and inner valleys lived on, and how seafaring, fishing, and trade were important for local communities.
