About

Soviet cinema concealed passions not only on the screen but also beyond it. Aesthetic conflicts, directorial ambitions, and ideological clashes give rise to unexpected meanings and masterpieces. Vyacheslav Shmyrov reveals to the audience the backstage of these creative duels and emotional battles. Cinema is not only a reflection of time but also a battlefield. Not political, but aesthetic. Debates over form, intonation, plot twists. "Invisible Duels of the Soviet Screen" is a look inside a world where each film entered into dialogue, sometimes sharp and tense, with another film, another director, another language. Vyacheslav Shmyrov, a film scholar and head of the Yeltsin Center Film Club, continues the series in which he discusses hidden conflicts in Soviet cinema. This lecture will focus on the subtle-but very harsh-clashes between Alexei German and Larisa Shepitko, German and Semyon Aranovich. What lay behind the perception of "Ascension" as a challenge? Why was "Lapshin" left on the shelf while "Torpedo Bombers" made it to the screen and received a state award? And where in this dialogue is the parody hidden in "The Diamond Arm"? Ideas on where to go in Yekaterinburg are gathered on our website.
