About

A live guide to the gastronomic map of the 19th century. What did Petersburg taste like? The lecture "No Petersburg Without 'Kyuba'!" offers a look at the city of the 19th century through menus, signs, and routes. This story is not about recipes, but about social roles and rules. Who had access to first-class restaurants? Who chose the confectioneries? Where did people look for cheap and filling food? Why did some establishments become fashionable addresses while others remained staples of daily life? Guide Irina Tyheeva will assemble a mosaic of urban gastronomy: first-rate restaurants like "Dyum", night feasts at Borel with a gypsy choir, democratic kitchens for workers, coffee houses, and Rensk cellars where drinks and conversation were valued. We will peek into "Dominik", where writers with limited budgets went, and into the confectioneries of Izler or Pfeiffer - safe spaces for lonely ladies. Even fugitives like Peter Kropotkin had their tactical addresses, and "Donon" in this logic also acquires a narrative. The lecture is part of the XI historical and cultural festival "Day of the House - 2025". Where to go in St. Petersburg today, look for on our website.
