About

The world of Antiquity is often associated with marble columns and heroic myths, but behind the familiar images lies the reality of beliefs, fears, and hopes. The lecture will discuss how the Hellenes envisioned the structure of the invisible world and the place of humans within it. Listeners will learn what the concept of "soul" meant for the inhabitants of the ancient city, why it was imagined as several "layers," and how this was reflected in burial rites. Specific archaeological finds and epigraphic sources will be examined, through which scholars reconstruct religious practices: from amulets and spells to rituals related to the veneration of ancestors and the gods of Olympus. A separate section will be dedicated to magic in the everyday life of the Bosporan Hellene. The lecture is delivered by historian P.A. Nikulin, junior research fellow at the A.S. Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. The format of the meeting allows for a live explanation of complex terms and the opportunity to ask questions. For other events in Nizhny Novgorod, check KudaGo.
