About

The lecture dedicated to the circles of the 18th century reveals the path from private conversations to underground unions and the first actions. The 18th century in Russia is often described as a time of political silence: questions of power were decided by a narrow circle, while the general public remained an observer. In private drawing rooms and classrooms, interest in "state affairs" begins to emerge. Guests of the lecture will examine early typologies of circles - from student and noble to inter-class - and learn how a network arose from the exchange of texts and home reading. You will discuss the mechanics of conspiracy, the distribution of roles, the role of charismatic leaders and "invisible" work, the reasons for radicalization: the gap between expectations and opportunities, the harsh reaction of the state, public punishments. Listeners will learn how the state learned to distinguish degrees of threat and act preemptively, while the circles, in response, refined discipline, the language of signals, and internal censorship. Thus, the dynamics of "power - underground" is formed, where both sides are forced to adapt quickly. All entertainment in St. Petersburg is gathered on our website.
