About

The lecture will trace how men's fashion at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries evolved from dandyism and Victorian strictness to the prototype of the modern suit. Through magazines, photographs, and paintings, attendees will see how industry, sports, aestheticism, and the rise of the middle class changed the dress code, silhouette, everyday style, and perceptions of status. The lecture is dedicated to the period when strict Victorian canons gradually gave way to more practical and mobile forms. The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries became a time when the men's wardrobe ceased to be merely a sign of class affiliation and increasingly connected with the image of the modern urban individual. The rise of the middle class, industrial development, mass production of clothing, and a new lifestyle made the suit more accessible, functional, and closer to the norms recognized today. The dress code did not disappear, but its rules became more flexible and depended on work, leisure, sports, social habits, and technologies. The lecture will analyze the evolution of key wardrobe elements: silhouette, cut, details, accessories, and principles of combining items. Register on Timepad. The poster for St. Petersburg is available on KUDAGO.
