We rarely look up in the metro - and that's a pity: above the escalators and platforms lies a whole artistic world. The lecture "Mosaics of the Moscow Metro" invites you to view the underground as a museum we enter every day for business, not for art. The reason for the discussion is significant - the 90th anniversary of the General Plan for the reconstruction of Moscow and the metro, which changed the scale of the city and its visual language. Art historian Maria Nikitina will explain why mosaics turned out to be the ideal technique for the metro and how they "work" in the underground space. The lecture will take place at the Nekrasov Library. The discussion will cover Roman and Florentine traditions, pre-revolutionary heritage, and Soviet artistic experiments integrated into the architecture of the stations. Special attention will be given to familiar routes: "Komsomolskaya", "Savyolovskaya", "Dostoevskaya", where mosaics converse with history, photography, and book graphics. In the end, the lecture will extend beyond the hall and turn into a mental walk through the metro - with hints on where and how to look.
