What could the Moscow District have become if the ideas of Leningrad architects from the 1930s had come to life? In 1935, the General Plan for the Development of Leningrad was adopted, which assigned the Moscow District the role of a new public center for the city. The era of the first five-year plans dictated ambitious goals: an ideal socialist highway was to run through here, and along its axis, monumental ensembles symbolizing the power of the new country were to rise. At the lecture "Dreams of Leningrad. Moscow District," researcher from the Museum of Civil Aviation Ariadna Markelova will discuss how this district was envisioned by Soviet architects. Guests will learn about the parks, squares, embankments, and canals that could have appeared but remained only in drawings and competition projects. Particular attention will be paid to the dominant structures that were planned as semantic and visual centers of the new urban environment but were never built.
