Lichens survive frost, radiation, and nearly complete vacuum - which is why they are sent to space experiments. In this lecture, we will explore how their symbiosis works, what results orbital tests have yielded, and why these "silent survivors" are important for future Martian bases. The speaker is lichenologist Zhanna Zholobova. A lichen may seem like an inconspicuous crust on a stone or tree bark, but inside it operates a whole "team": a fungus, an alga, and bacteria. This alliance knows how to survive what sounds like a death sentence for most living organisms - cold, desiccation, nutrient deficiency, and intense ultraviolet radiation. That is why lichens have long intrigued space researchers: they help test where the boundary lies between the "living" and the "preserved". In the lecture, lichenologist Zhanna Zholobova, a junior researcher at the V.L. Komarov Botanical Institute, will explain what experiments with lichens are conducted in orbit and why scientists test their survival limits.
