About

In the final meeting of the series "The Lives of Shakespeare's Heroes," we will talk about those who usually remain in the shadows. In Shakespearean theater, alongside kings and lovers, there are always characters from the common folk - servants, cooks, valets, peasants, townspeople. Their lines may seem short and funny, but they often bring dynamics to the action, change the rhythm of the scene, and make the drama even more lifelike. The lecture will be conducted by Vladimir Sergeyevich Makarov and Evgenia Olegovna Gulbis. Listeners will learn how the comic layer in the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries enhances the tragic, leading to a new genre for the late 16th century - tragicomedy. We will also discuss how "low" roles are structured and how they were perceived by theater audiences in the Elizabethan era. In the second part of the lecture, participants will examine the image of the Nurse from "Romeo and Juliet" through examples from the productions of Simon Godwin, Kenneth Branagh, and Erica Wyman. KudaGo features the current Moscow program.
