At the Center for Rare Books and Collections "The Universe of Gutenberg," Yuri Shestakov - a lithographer and collector who creates "artist's books" - will speak. He will explain how lithography works and why this technique became key for books in the last century, where text and image are created by one author. Yuri Shestakov is a member of the Moscow Union of Artists and a recipient of an award for his contributions to the development of visual arts. He has worked on books based on texts by Villon, Rabelais, Sappho, and Babel. The lecture will focus on French masters - Bonnard, Toulouse-Lautrec, Chagall, Matisse, Braque - who made prints from stones and plates, turning the publication into a cohesive work of art. Shestakov will show how the format, typesetting, and decor are subordinated to a single artistic concept, and how the illustration becomes part of the ensemble of the page. You will learn how an "artist's book" differs from a regular illustrated edition and how this genre developed in Russia and France. Admission is free with prior registration.
