About

In discussions about documentary cinema, it is rarely mentioned how quickly it became a tool of influence. The lecture in Moscow will examine the moment when the camera stopped being just an observer. The focus will be on the 1930s - a time when documentary cinema was formalizing as a genre and began to engage with the public agenda. The British school and John Grierson will be discussed: his ideas about the "social mission" of cinema and the debate with Flaherty's approach. At the same time, the situation in the USA will be looked at, where documentary filmmaking is developing towards political and news projects - with commissions, commentary, and clear dramaturgy. Different ways of communicating with the audience will be highlighted: from an educational tone to more direct media impact. Admission is free with registration. For more details, please check with the foreign literature library. Our website will tell you where to go in Moscow today.
