Participants of the lecture will learn how the courtyards-wells were arranged and what functions the numerous wings, barns, ice houses, and stables served. You will hear a story about communal arrangements: from firewood storage to the placement of laundries, workshops, and toilets. Special attention will be given to cellars-not only as technical spaces but also as the center of the economic life of the building. One of the topics will be the plumbing and sewage systems of that time: how comfortable was the system, how was water supplied, and how were waste disposed of. You will compare the lifestyle of a St. Petersburg resident in the early 20th century with that of a modern city dweller, understanding how much urban life has changed.
