About

The capital of South Africa resembles a postcard: ocean, mountain above the city, beaches with penguins, and wineries nearby. But behind the stunning views lies a contradictory metropolis where natural wealth coexists with sharp social contrasts. The author of the lecture, Andrey Pleshko, lived in South Africa for several months, explored Cape Town and its surroundings, and guided travelers. The conversation with the audience will begin with the history of South Africa and the legacy of apartheid. Modern Cape Town simultaneously gives the impression of a free, vibrant city while remaining a space of noticeable inequality. The lecturer will also talk about natural attractions: Table Mountain, the ocean coastline, whale watching spots, penguin colonies, and wineries in the vicinity. Participants will gain insight into distances and the diversity of locations, and how to build an interesting and rich itinerary. A separate part will be dedicated to safety. There are many contradictory perceptions surrounding Cape Town: some consider it the most dangerous city in the world, while others describe it as a convenient destination for independent travel. The lecturer will explain which concerns are justified, where caution is especially important, and how to plan a trip without falling into carelessness, but also without unnecessary anxiety. Ideas on where to go in Moscow are collected on our website.
