About

Listeners will learn how the varnas were formed, why castes are associated with professions and marriage, and will also explore the features of traditions that continue to influence the lives of millions of people. The Indian caste system is often perceived as a phenomenon of the past; however, it continues to exist today, remaining an important part of social relations. In the meeting, listeners will be able to understand how this complex structure of society arose, what historical processes influenced its formation, and why the topic of castes remains relevant in the modern world. The lecture will cover the concept of varnas and the characteristics of caste belonging. Participants will learn what traits may be associated with belonging to a certain group, how profession, family traditions, place of residence, and cultural norms influence this. Special attention will be given to how the residents of India themselves relate to this system, and what opportunities and limitations it creates.
