About

The region between the Vistula and Neman will be presented as a living map of European upheavals - from the Baltic Prussians and the campaigns of the Teutonic Order to the Kingdom of Prussia, the Treaty of Versailles, and the consequences of war. The meeting will explore the territory between the Vistula and Neman, where cultures, languages, rulers' ambitions, and the interests of neighboring powers have collided for centuries. The narrative will begin with the Baltic Prussians and the 13th century, when the Teutonic Order arrived in these lands. The conversation will then shift to Duke Albrecht, the transformation of the Order's possessions into the first Protestant state in Europe, and the birth of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701. A separate section will be dedicated to the 18th and 19th centuries, German colonization, the formation of Prussian identity, and the agricultural significance of the region. The lecturer will also explain why, after the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, these lands were separated from Germany by the "Polish Corridor" and how the status of the enclave heightened political tension. In the finale, the discussion will cover the difficult years of war and the subsequent fate of former Prussia, including the territories that were ceded to Poland. We share on our website where to go in Saint Petersburg.
